How To Plant Ornamentals
All our compost block-grown ornamental plants have been hardened off before we send them out, and are ready to go in the ground as soon as you receive them. If you are unable to plant immediately, carefully fold back the polythene and newspaper wrappings to root level, keep plants moist and place them somewhere shady.
Where to Plant
Follow the guidance on individual plant labels. There is an ornamental for every situation in a garden, be it sun, shade, dry soil or wet.
When to Plant
Ornamentals can be planted at almost any time, provided that the ground isn't frozen or waterlogged. Check the guidance on individual plant labels for information specific to each plant.
How to Plant
Good soil preparation is important, especially when planting out a new bed or border. Dig over the ground and remove all weeds.
Lay the plants out on the soil, to decide on a final arrangement before actually planting them.
Tease out the roots of each plant slightly if necessary, then use a trowel to create a hole just deep enough and wide enough for the rootball. Bury the root, leaving the base of the shoots or stems above ground. Firm down soil around the plants and water in well.
Spacing
Plants need space to grow. If planted too close together, plants will perform badly as they will compete for light and water. It is possible to place small plants closer together initially but they will need lifting and dividing as they grow older.

Maintenance
Keep plants well watered, particularly in their first year. Apply a plant food such as our Instant Life in early spring. Weed beds and borders regularly. Taller plants may need staking as they grow.

Keep an eye out for slugs and snails. Apply our BioFriend Slug-Banish as necessary.
