What is the Award Of Garden Merit?
The Award of Garden Merit (which is often shortened to AGM) is bestowed on plants that have been extensively trialled and found to be exceptional.
To qualify for an AGM, a plant
- Must be readily available (i.e. grown in sufficient quantity to be readily available to purchase).
- Must be of outstanding excellence for garden decoration or use.
- Must be of good constitution.
- Must not require highly specialist growing conditions or care.
- Must not be particularly susceptible to any pest or disease.
- Must not be subject to an unreasonable degree of reversion ('mutating' back to one of its parents).
The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) trials a huge variety of plants each year (or in some cases over a number of years) and monitors their growing characteristics before deciding on whether a plant is worthy of an AGM - so, in effect, a plant that has been awarded an AGM has been recommended by the Royal Horticultural Society!
