Description
Also known as Carambola or Kamaranga.
Can be grown as a shrub or a short-trunked tree and has lovely small, pink-red-purple bell-flowers with white edges which appear in clusters at the ends of the branches. The leaves are smooth across the top but underneath they have fine hairs and are whitish in colour, and sensitive. The wood of the bush is white but turns a reddish colour. The fruits themselves are an orange-yellow colour, oblong with a thin waxy skin. When the fruits are fully ripe they have a yellow translucent flesh which is crunchy and juicy. If you cut them through the cross section they are star-shaped with long, flat, thin brown seeds.
The fruits are usually eaten raw but can be used in cooking to make relishes, jams and juices. They are rich in antioxidants, potassium and Vitamin C with low sugar and sodium levels. Please note these fruits contain oxalic acid and caramboxin.
These trees usually start fruiting (in a ideal climate) when they are approximately 4-8 years old and can then fruit up to three times a year. The flowers and leaves are also edible. Pollination of flowers is carried out by bees and other pollinating insects.
Whilst grown for its fruit the Star Fruit is also a very ornamental plant in its own right.
Young plants require more care and warmth; as they age they will take more variation of temperature.
