Description
Sometimes known as the 'ground bean', Tendergreen is a splendid heavy-cropping, tasty variety for open ground growing or starting under cloches. Being both dwarf in habit and self supporting this is the perfect variety for those who don't want the bother of putting up tall netting or similar structures as required for Climbing French Beans.
The pale green pods often display distinct purple markings (which disappear on cooking) and are virtually stringless. Flavour is excellent and they have a lovely crunch when eaten raw - they freeze really well too.
- For Growing Outside
- Sow mid April to mid July 3" (7.5 cm) apart in rows 18" (45 cm) apart
- Sow in 2" (5 cm) deep drills.
- Whilst there is no need to provide any support whatsoever, you will find that the crop will stay cleaner and more off the ground (so easier to pick) if you use pea sticks or similar to a height of a couple of feet (60cm).
- For Growing Under Protection
- Sow March to May 3" (7.5 cm) apart in rows 18" (45 cm) apart.
- Sow in 2" (5 cm) deep drills.
- You can also grow in large tubs or pots.
- Whilst there is no need to provide any support whatsoever, you will find that the crop will stay cleaner and more off the ground (so easier to pick) if you use pea sticks or similar to a height of a couple of feet (60cm).
- Top Tips
- These thrive in warm conditions and so are an ideal crop to grow under protection - greenhouse or polytunnel.
- Whilst they will prove drought tolerant, good watering from flowering time onwards will ensure maximum pod development.
- Mulch around the stems in early summer.
