Description
This bean has been nicknamed the magic bean in our house. The pods start off a beautiful purple colour (which looks stunning in salads) but when you steam thm they turn green, as if by magic! The beans have a lovely flavour and our kids love them! Why not grow the yellow (Hildora) and green (Tendergreen) ones too for a truly rainbow effect.
Produces a lovely, long (slightly curved) dark purple bean with a high yield. Easy to grow and well worth it. Does require a little support to get the best results from the plants.
- Plants have purple flowers which look very pretty so could be grown in your flower bed too!
- Resistant to Bean Common Mosaic Virus and Anthracnose.
- For Growing Under Protection
- Sow under glass from February onwards
- Germinate between 15-30°C
- Transplant when large enough to handle.
- Reach approximately 14" (35 cm) tall.
- Whilst there is no need to provide any support whatsoever, you will find that the crop will stay cleaner and more off the ground (so easier to pick) if you use pea sticks or similar.
- For Growing Outside
- Sow direct into the open ground from May until mid July (when night time temperatures warm up).
- Plant 8" (20 cm) apart in rows 18" (45 cm) apart.
- Sow 2" (5 cm) deep.
- Harvest from July onwards.
- Reach approximately 14" (35 cm) tall.
- You can also grow in large tubs or pots.
- Whilst there is no need to provide any support whatsoever, you will find that the crop will stay cleaner and more off the ground (so easier to pick) if you use pea sticks or similar.
- Top Tips
- These thrive in warm conditions and so are an ideal crop to grow under protection - greenhouse or polytunnel.
- Mulch around the stems in early Summer.
