Description
A fairly new variety of Crab Apple that we have to say we were not aware of until it was recommended to us by a nurseryman friend who said, "this is far better than 'Golden Hornet' - heavier cropping and more reliable". From what we have seen we have to agree!
In spring the tree is literally smothered in delicate white blossoms that are suffused with pink. Fruit set is excellent, producing a heavy crop of 'butter-golden' fruits that weigh the branches down making the tree almost look like it is weeping. As the fruit ripens it takes on a reddy colour (the photos are of ripe fruits here at the nursery).
Plant one or two near your apple trees, especially non self-fertile varieties, to ensure good fruit set.
- Season of use – October.
- Self fertile– but pollination by another apple will maximise yield.
- Grown on M26 rootstock for an ultimate (un-pruned) height of 8–12 feet (2.4–3.65 metres) but can easily be kept at a height of 6-8 feet (1.8–2.4 metres).
Recommended by the RHS to be an excellent attractant and nectar source for bees and other beneficial insects.
Recommended by the RHS to assist in encouraging bats into the garden as the flowers are likely to attract moths and other night-flying insects which bats love to eat!
