Beetroot Plants
Beetroot is a delicious and nutritious root vegetable first cultivated by the Romans, full of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants whilst being low in fat.
Don't forget that not only can you eat the beets but also the leaves are great in salads, making it a very useful and worthwhile crop to grow. With its high sugar content it is a particularly sweet vegetable, good eaten raw or cooked (and said to be good as a substitute for chocolate but we're not quite so sure about that one!).
Our beetroot plants reduce the amount of time you have to wait before you can start cropping and with them being delivered throughout the UK you only have to go out to plant them with a trowel!
Don't forget if you can't keep up with them as young beets they can be eaten much larger (and make delicious 'chips') Here at the nursery we use beetroot a lot throughout the winter months as a vegetable simply harvesting them as required. Alternatively you can harvest them and keep them stored for the winter if you prefer.
Beetroot was originally cultivated for it's leaves, which are high in oxalic acid and vitamin K. The juice is said to be good for reducing blood pressure as it dilates the blood vessels, some believe that it could help combat dementia. The betaines within the red beetroots help liver cells to release toxins and prevent fatty acids building up. Beetroot is also good for eye health. So what are you waiting for, get growing some beetroot and help you body!
