Description
Winter savory is definately an asset to any herb garden. Unlike the annual variety of savory, Winter Savory has a very strong flavour with attractive white flowers and dark green semi-evergreen leaves. It is perennial in habit
Adds that special tang (peppery spiciness)to a variety of dishes.
It is said to be one of the oldest flavouring herbs!
Also known as mountain savory.
- Hardy, woody perennial.
- Likes full sun.
- Prefers well-drained, rich, alkaline soil.
- Reaches 10" (25 cm) tall.
- Very strong flavour.
- Seeds can be sown in late spring or early autumn.
- Gently push the seeds into the soil.
- Seedlings should be thinned to 18" (45 cm) apart when large enough.
- Attractive white/pink flowers July to September.
- It is recommended that you cut plants back in the autumn (and replace every three years).
- Culinary Uses.
- Good for salt-free diets.
- Can be used for stuffing and stews.
- Good accompaniment for beans (as counteracts the flatulence).
- Adds that special tang to a variety of dishes.
- Has been used commercially to flavour salami.
- Can be added to sauces and vinegars (as the Romans did).
