Description
In time gone by this very tall growing variety was widely grown. The cabbage'forms on top of a single stem around 4 feet (1.2 metres) or taller.
The cabbage can, of course be eaten; but the main attarction was the long stem that can be cut, trimmed of leaves, dried and then made into walking sticks after being given a coat of varnish or stain. A knob for the handle and possibly a door stop as a ferrule completes your walking stick.
SO you really can grow your own walking sticks!
Recommended by the RHS to be an excellent attractant and nectar source for bees and other beneficial insects if allowed to 'go over' and flower (so if you have room leave any plants in that have gone too far rather than pulling them out straight away).
- Biennial.
- Likes a sunny position (will tolerate some shade).
- Prefers well-drained fertile soil.
- Can be grown near the sea.
- Can reach 10 feet (3 metres) high, though 4-5 feet (1.2-1.5 metres) is more normal.
- Both flowers and leaves are edible.
- Sow during spring.
- Plant out 4 feet (1.2 metres) x 2½ feet (75 cm) apart.
- Flowers May-August.
