Vegetables For Microgreens
If you've ever fancied growing microgreens, then this obviously the category for you! In a nutshell, microgreens are ultra-young, super-tender leaves, sprouts or greens that are harvested before they even reach 'baby leaves' or 'baby veg' status. These mini sprouts and seedlings may be small, but are bursting with flavour - that's why they're so often used in posh nosh!
Because of their tender state, many microgreens should be grown under protection, and can be raised in trays or guttering pipes.
The term Micro green or microgreen refers to whole plants that are harvested and eaten at a very young stage - just after the sprout stage, but before the plant reaches baby leaf stage. Microgreens are often super-young green leaves, sprouts and salads, although some varieties of vegetables can also be grown for microgreens, where surplus young seedlings are removed through thinning.
And because microgreens are so tender, we thoroughly recommend that all sowings, germination and harvesting are undertaken under protection - even an unheated greenhouse could mean the difference between a plentiful harvest and nothing to show for your efforts! Care should also be taken with watering your microgreens - the young seedlings can be easily broken by even a fine sprinkling of water, so growing the seeds on moisture-retaining pads or a special medium with support is ideal. This way, the seedlings receive a plentiful supply of moisture, without the danger of being damaged. Growing microgreens in guttering pipes is also a great way to keep soil moist and save space, where it is at a premium.
You might be surprised at the number of products in this listing - but almost any tiny seed will grow as a microgreen... although pea shoots, salad leaves, green leafs and leafy vegetables tend to be the most popular microgreens.
