Description
This lovely, traditional variety of tomato is popular for it's flavour and was bred in 1908 by Alan Balch in Scotland and named after the granite island called Ailsa Craig off the Ayrshire coast which could be seen from Balch's nursery in Girvan. It was originally known as 'Balch's Ailsa Craig' and is believed to be a cross between Balch's Fillbasket and Carter's Sunrise.
It's a heavy cropping middle sized red fruit, which are usually 30 to 70 grams and should not be missed! The flavour develops more as the tomatoes ripen more and whilst is can be grown outside, the flavours are better if grown inside.
The medium-sized fruits look just as a tomato should and are borne on heavy trusses. With good disease resistance this is a reliable variety to grow even in a poor year. This variety will perform well planted inside or outside.
- This is an indeterminate variety and best grown as a cordon (vine).
- For best yields, stop at 5th truss if growing under protection (3rd outside).
- Whilst the best crops will be grown under protection, this variety can also be grown outside.
