Description

The liquorice, as we commonly know it, is extracted from the root and is sweet. It is used to make confectionary, flavour medicines, tobacco and as a dietary supplement.

If you are growing this plant to harvest the roots, you will need to be patient and this can take four years, but two to three years is more common. These plants have a pale blue flower on loose upright spikes in late Summer and are good in wild gardens and informal borders.

A flowering plant of the bean family. Also known as sweetwood.

Native to Western Asia, North Africa and Southern Europe.
