Description
Rosemary takes its name from 'ros' meaning 'dew' and 'marinus' meaning 'ocean', reflecting its original habitat, the Mediterranean coast. It has a long history as a medicinal herb, being first mentioned by Dioscorides and Galen almost two thousand years ago. It also featured in Hungary water, one of the first known alcohol-based perfumes, possibly dating back as far as the fourteenth century. Rosemary is of course mentioned in Shakespeare, in Ophelia's speech in 'Hamlet': 'here's rosemary for remembrance'. Rosemary is also used in wedding wreaths to symbolise fidelity, love and abiding friendship.
Rosemary 'Seven Seas', also known as 'Severn Sea' is a large, sprawling bush variety, reaching 1 m in height, with attractive dark blue flowers.
Recommended by the RHS to be an excellent attractant and nectar source for bees and other beneficial insects.

- Evergreen perennial.
