Description
Originating from Brighton in the 1920s this truly is a tried and trusted variety. Reliable and heavy cropping this is probably not a variety we would choose to force, as it is so valuable as a late-season variety.
The thick and juicy stems tend to have more of a green tinge than many other varieties of Rhubarb and are also far 'softer'.
But where this variety really comes into its own is with its long cropping season. Due to the naturally low levels of oxalic acid (the compound that causes the bitterness in Rhubarb) in Glaskins Perpetual and the fact that these do not increase as they do in other varieties as the season progresses this Rhubarb variety can be harvested later into the summer and even into the early autumn.
A truly lovely variety in every way.
- Prefers a rich but well drained soil.
- Plant any time of year, spacing plants 3 x 3 feet (90 x 90 cm) apart.
- Keep weed free and water well in dry spells.
- Avoid harvesting in the first year and only lightly in the second.
- Harvest by grasping at the base of the stalk and tearing away from the clump.
- When growth dies down in the autumn generously mulch the crown with well-rotted manure or similar.
