Raspberries
Raspberry canes have long been considered a staple of the British 'kitchen garden', with summer- and autumn-fruiting raspberry plants offering an array of delicate and robustly flavoured crops from around mid-summer onwards, they also symbolise protection and love.
Our raspberry canes are supplied as bare root canes direct from our UK nursery, and we offer our customers the chance to make extra savings with each purchase when bought in larger quantities. The minimum number of raspberry canes that can be purchased is five.
Raspberries are one of the ultimate summer or autumn fruits, and we've really done our homework to ensure that we offer our customers only the best-tasting varieties in our selection of raspberry canes.
If you're unsure where to start when it comes to your raspberry canes - then choosing the time of year that you'd like your plants to come into fruit is a good beginning. All raspberry plants ideally need a sunny spot with moist but well-draining soil - mulching in late winter or early spring with well-rotted manure or bark chippings will help the soil to retain moisture throughout the summer and help to suppress weeds.
Most raspberry canes will fruit during summer, and are known as 'Floricane' varieties, or the much more sensibly named 'summer-fruiting' varieties! Summer-fruiting raspberry plants will produce fruit from mid-July onwards, and throughout August, with the highest yields generally appearing in the first weeks of August. Autumn-fruiting raspberry canes (Primocanes) crop from around late August, and in warmer years when first frosts are delayed can fruit as late as November. For the longest picking season, you could always opt for both summer- and autumn-fruiting varieties, but it's essential that you prune the different raspberry canes accordingly!
Pruning raspberry canes is actually a relatively simple undertaking once you have the basics. Autumn-fruiting varieties are the easiest to tackle, as all canes can be cut back to ground level in winter and subsequently mulched with well-rotted manure. Summer varieties are a little more complicated as raspberries will only grow on older wood, so once the canes have finished fruiting, they can be cut back to around 6 inches above ground, with pruning taking place again around March the following year to remove any 'die back' and excessive growth.
