Description
Sometimes known as Guava, Guavasteen,Pineapple Guava and even by its previous Botanical name of Feijoa.
This is an interesting subject for the garden that produces edible green skinned egg sized fruits that taste of plum, apple, peach, strawberry and pineapple all rolled into one, sweet and aromatic.
The unusual flowers, which are crimson and white with crimson stamens, are edible too - with a rich aromatic flavour.
Originating from Brazil, South America,
- Perennial.
- Self fertile.
- Like a warm sunny position (a South West facing wall or fence is ideal).
- Prefers a light loamy well-drained soil.
- Prefers light shade but will tolerate full sun.
- Succeeds in any reasonably good soil, even chalk.
- Tolerates drought and salt winds.
- Evergreen.
- Can be grown outside in the UK (hardy to -12C) throughout the year once fully established (usually takes a few years).
- Fruits will only ripen outside in long hot summers (you may need to protect from late Spring frosts and early Autumn frosts), or if grown in a conservatory sunroom.
- Can reach 23 feet (7 metres) if allowed too!
- Edible flowers.
- Will take several years to fruit.
