- This sub-species of common oregano (Origanum vulgare) has a very distinctive hot, spicy flavour and is an important herb in Mediterranean cookery.

Description
The Ancient Greeks called Oregano 'joy of the mountain', and it is still woven into bridal wreaths. Hot and spicy, Greek Oregano is the most flavourful variety of Oregano, and ideal for cooking. Use fresh or dried.
Recommended by the RHS to be an excellent attractant and nectar source for bees and other beneficial insects.
- Perennnial, suitable for most kinds of soil.
- Can reach 24" in height, with a spread of 24".
- Thrives in full sun but also happy in partial shade.
- The hotter the climate, the more pungent the flavour.
- The small white flowers are popular with bees.
- Harvest any time but especially when just ready to flower.
Culinary Uses
- Important herb in Greek, Italian and Mexican cooking.
- Often used dried rather than fresh.
- Can be used in marinades for grilled meats and kebabs.
- Combines well with tomatoes; a must sprinkled on pizza.
- Chop finely and add sparingly to salads.
Medicinal Uses
- Beneficial to the digestive and respiratory systems.
- Leaves and stems have antiseptic and anti-spasmodic properties.
- Good for colds and influenza.
Other Uses
- Used in soaps and perfumery.
- A dye can be made from the flowering tops.
- It is said to repel ants.
- Ideal ground cover, forming slow-spreading clumps.
