Description
These lovely little ground cover plants are a real joy to have in the garden. Growing to a maximum of around 6" (15 cm) tall they have a compact but spreading habit. Is commonly grown in Northern areas of the World such as Russia and Norway.
Will tolerate temperatures down to -40C but don't like to grow in the hot sunshine, prefer the shade of tree canopies (or similar), likes a damp poor soil.
In May / June time they are covered with pretty pinky-white bell flowers which develop into bright red berries that are about the size of a pea. The berries usually ripen in two flushes - late July and late September - and are perfect for Cranberry jelly, sauces, preserves and, of course, drinks.
Also known as lingonberries, brawlins, hurtleberry, red whortleberry, whinberry, munshock, lingberry, hurst, flowering box, foxberry, partridgeberry and cowberry.
- Evergreen.
- Very hardy.
- Harvest late July and late Septmber.
- Suitable for both open ground or container growing.
- Prefers a shady position (particularly in hot Summers).
- Prefers moist ground.
- For open ground planting plant 12" x 12" (30 x 30 cm) apart.
- Ericaceous, so will require soil or compost of an acidic nature.
