Description
Peppermint has dark green distinctively toothed oval leaves on short red / purple stalks producing purple flowers with a strong, distinctive peppermint scent and flavour.
Peppermint is the original source of peppermint oil.
It thought to have originated in England around 1753. It came into use for medicine in Western Europe in the 18th century, and was grown commercially in Mitcham, Surrey and is thought to be a hybrid of Watermint and Spearmint.
Recognised to be an excellent attractant and nectar source for bees and other beneficial insects.
- Hardy perennial.
- Reaches 3 feet (90 cms) in height.
- Flowers Aug - Oct with pretty purplish flowers.
- Likes a sunny position.
- Prefers a moist soil.
- Best grown in a container as it is invasive (although not as invasive as some).
Culinary Uses
- Great for making tea.
- Good addition to salads.
- Good for flavouring confectionery or ice-cream.
- Can be dried.
Medicinal Uses
- Tea can be used to treat fever.
- Helps headaches.
- Can aid digestive disorders (including irritable bowel and especially flatulence!)
- Peppermint is regularly found in indigestion remedies but can help nausea and vomiting.
- Has antiseptic and antibacterial properties.
- As a lotion can reduce sensitivity (particularly good for muscle and nerve pain).
- Can be used as a chest rub for respiratory problems.
- Taken in excess can cause abortion.
- Tests have shown that is can help reduce blood sugar (so aids mild diabetes).
- Can help reduce blood pressure.
Other Uses
- Used in toothpaste and chewing gum.
- Can be used for pot pourri.
- Good insect repellent.
- May deter rats!
