Description
Land cress is an ideal plant for those that do not have running water, a pond, stream or very boggy area as it does not require as much water as watercress. Best grown as a cut and come again crop, to get the best from it.
Flavour is almost identical to watercress, although a little stronger / more peppery and it can be used in the same way and is rich in vitamin in minerals.
Also known as American Cress, Bank cress, poor mans cabbage and Scurvy cress.
Whilst it is native to South Europe or West Asia but has been grown in the UK since the 17th Century.
- Sow thinly in seed trays or small pots and just cover seed.
- Plant out when large enough to handle 10" (25 cm) apart in rows 12" (30 cm) apart.
- Likes a moist, part shad to full sun position.
- Can also be grown in pots.
- Biennial.

- Though not as water-dependant as conventional watercress it still prefers moist conditions.
- Pick regularly to encourage young growth.
- Culinary Uses
- Can be made into soup or pesto.
- An addition to sandwishes.
- Can be cooked like spinach.
