Description
Very sweet with a delicate flavour. The leaves can be used to add piquancy to summer salads or as an alternative to watercress as a garnish.
Unlike ordinary celery this dwarf form can be grown in pots under protection without heat to use in winter as it is more hardy than conventional celery varieties.
Given good open weather, sowing to maturity can be as little as ten weeks.
- Sow under protection March-April in modules or small pots. Barely cover the seed.
- Grow on under protection allowing the plants to root out fully and produce a reasonable amount of leaf.
- Plant out 12-18" (30-45 cm) apart in rows12-18" (30-45 cm) apart in late May/early June and after all risk of frost.
- Do not be in too much of a rush to plant out - as premature planting when cold will cause bolting.
- Top Tips
- Whilst celery generally prefers a deep and rich soil, Kintsai is not quite so fussy and can successfully be grown in containers. We would suggest one plant per 5 litre container.
- Watering shortly before harvest will make your Kintsai store for longer.
