Grape Vine Macabeo

Description

A white grape which is widely grown in Spain and France (either side of the Pyrenees). It produces mildly acidic grapes with a neutral but floral taste. It can be used to make wine on its own or can be blended with others. Commonly used to make white Rioja and blended to make Cava (along with Parellada and Xarel-lo).

The large grapes which are produced in abundance are good at withstanding oxidation. Has a lovely honeyed / grapefruit flavour to it. It is usually picked before it is fully ripe to make wine, and is used for both sweet, sparkling and rich dry wines, is particularly useful as a blending variety.

Also known as Viura or Macabeu.

Up until recently it was recommended this variety was only grown under protection in the UK. As our climate warms, this variety will now perform and ripen most years when grown outside in the more Southern Counties of the UK. For those further up the Country we would continue to recommend growing under protection (greenhouse, polytunnel or conservatory)
