Description
Before the indiscriminate use of herbicides, these beautiful poppies were a common site in the UK and European countryside. As such extensive herbicide usage has decreased due to becoming uneconomic we are thankfully starting to see a comeback as the seed as lain dormant in the soil. In fact it was this ability to lay dormant until brought to the surface that caused these poppies to spring up on the war torn battlefields of France.
Plant these into the margins of your garden, on open areas or banks and you will be rewarded with the gorgeous simplicity of their black centred scarlet-red flowers. And provided you allow these to run to seed you will be able to enjoy these every year!
Recommended by the RHS to be an excellent attractant and nectar source for bees and other beneficial insects.
- Each block contains multiple plants so can be planted as a block or gently teased apart and planted individually.
- Likes a full sun position.
- Prefers well drained soil.
- Provided plants are allowed to form seed heads and drop these will self seed each year.
- Flowers May - July.
- Culinary Uses
- Poppy seeds can be used in baking.
- Can be added to curry powder for texture or as a thickener.
- Other Uses
- Makes great bird food!
