Description
Cultivated for more than 3000 years and once considered an aphrodisiac, in the Middle Ages Coriander was used in love potions! The Romans used it with cumin and vinegar to make a preserve for meat.
Coriander is an invaluable herb for culinary use and an essential of Mexican and Indian cooking as well as in other regional dishes.
A member of the carrot family.
- Half hardy annual.
- Reaches 20" (50 cm) tall.
- White flowers, June to July.
- Likes a sunny or part shade position.
- Prefers a light but water-retentive soil (although not soggy) out of the wind.
- Can be grown in pots.
- Sow thinly in shallow drills (or pots) early spring until late autumn.
- Lightly cover with soil/compost.
- Usually germinates in 5-10 days.
- Thin seedlings to 8" (20 cm) apart.
- Will produce leaves until the first frosts.
- Some people can find the smell of Coriander unpleasant.
- Culinary Uses.
- The root can be cooked and eaten as a vegetable.
- Used in stews or salads.
- Good for chutneys.
- Used a lot in Eastern cuisine and curries.
- Crushed seeds are used for flavouring, in baking and confectionery and as a spice.
- Used in liqueur manufacture.
- Flowers are edible.
- Medicinal Uses.
- Excellent aid for digestion and eases flatulence.
- Can be used to increase appetite.
- Leaves can be chewed to ease nausea.
- Can be used directly onto inflamed and sore skin or acne to ease symptoms.
- Can ease rheumatic joints and muscles.
- Helps the body's absorption of nutrients.
- Rich in Vitamin A and C.
- A tonic for the brain and nerves.
- Good for reducing fever / hot flushes.
- Can help cystitis, sore throats, hay fever and arthritis.
- Can ease migraines.

- Can relieve itchy skin rashes.
- The seeds are a mild sedative.
- The juice from the leaves can ease hay fever and allergies.

- Can be used to treat spider mite (with a strong infusion).
