Description
This beautiful plant can trace its origins back to the specie which grows wild in Eastern Canada and the United States - hence its common name 'Confederate Violet'. Bred and hybridised in Germany, these bring a whole new colour spectrum to what originate as a simple blue flowering plant.
Similar to the Sweet Violet, these grow as clumps of rich green, heart shaped foliage that carpet the ground. Come April the delicate flowers appear on short stems in shades of white, light blue, dark blue, red to violet - and even some speckled.
- Hardy, perennial.
- Flowers April - May.
- Grow to approximately 6" (15 cm) high.
- Thrives in shade but will tolerate a full sun position.
- Likes a rich soil.
- Plant 10" (25 cm) apart.
- Will spread up to 18" (45 cm).
- Lovely and highly scented cut flower.
- Culinary Uses
- Wonderful for crystallising and using for cake decorations.
- Edible flowers.
- Medicinal Uses
- Used by the Cherokee to treat coughs, sore throats and constipation.
