Description
Originating from the wooded swamps of Northern America this 'new' super fruit has been around for years! With its attractive Spring flowers and stunning Autumn flower this is a shrub that looks no less out of place in the ornamental garden as it does on the allotment or in the fruit cage!
The Autumn crop of dark black fruit is best left on the shrub until fully ripe and ready for harvest. For those with a sweeter tooth these can prove a little sharp when raw - but are perfect for jams and pies.
In Lithuania the fruit is used for making a wine, whilst in Poland they are used for making a herbal tea. They are also great for dehydrating.
- Grow to around 6 feet (2 metres) tall with a spreading and suckering habit.
- Flower May - June. Harvest Autumn.
- Thrive in full sun or partial shade.
- Tolerate moister soils, but not suitable for heavily waterlogged soils.
- Self Fertile.
