Description
Dyer's Chamomile, or Golden Marguerite, is used principally as a dye plant. As another of its names - Yellow Chamomile - suggests, the flowers can be used to make a yellow dye. Colours range from bright to an olive or brownish yellow, depending on the mordant or fixing agent being used.
Dyer's Chamomile is a hardy but short-lived perennial, with an upright habit and bright yellow daisy-like flowers. It has aromatic feathery blue-green leaves, and will reach a height of 1-2 feet (30-60 cm) with a spread of 1 foot (30 cm). It likes a well-drained sunny situation but is very adaptable. It is happy in most kinds of soil, though it will benefit from occasional applications of fertiliser. Dyer's Chamomile can also withstand drought but grows best if watered regularly.
In its first year, Dyer's Chamomile will bloom in August/September, after which it should be trimmed back. In its second year it will flower from June-August. Regular picking of flower heads will encourage further blooms. Harvest the mature flower heads every two to three weeks then dry and store until ready for use.
Not suitable for growing in containers or indoors.
Recommended by the RHS to be an excellent attractant and nectar source for bees and other beneficial insects.
