Description
A vegetable that is either loved or hated, and infamous for being cooked to mush!
We have specially blended four old established varieties to extend the cropping season from mid September until early April.
When cooked properly (not boiled to death) Brussels Sprouts are a delicious vegetable with a sweet and nutty taste - and can be a firm favourite with children who love the idea of them being 'baby cabbages'.
Sprouts are also good for you! Rich in sinigrin (which gives them their flavour), which has been proven to destroy pre-cancerous cells in the body.
Recommended by the RHS to be an excellent attractant and nectar source for bees and other beneficial insects if allowed to 'go over' and flower (so if you have room leave any plants in that have gone too far rather than pulling them out straight away).
- Sow April to May thinly in rows 6" (15 cm) apart, or sow into trays or modules.Sow " (2 cm) deep.
- Set out when large enough 2 feet (60 cm) by 2 feet (60 cm) apart.
- Harvest mid September - April.
Top Tips
- Plant firmly, and in windy areas consider staking.
- Protect from pigeons - they love Brassicas (so do partridges)
- Take precautions against the dreaded Cabbage White butterfly - inspect your crop regularly, spray with our BioFriend Plant Defence or use a physical barrier such as insect netting.
- Harvest from the bottom of the plant upwards.
- Sprouts harvested after frosts will have better flavour than those harvested before.
