Description
The flavour of this variety is quite exceptional and surpasses the taste or any bred 'for long shelf life' commercially grown strawberry. The large fruits are sweet and very juicy – a real dribble down your chin experience! In our opinion this is the best variety of strawberry there is.
Many major supermarkets are now using this variety of strawberry to make their jam – and a very sensible idea too!
Jeremy Shirley first saw these in Elmshorn in Germany back in the 1950s; these were growing in balcony troughs with runners all of 6 feet (1.8 metres) in length, festooned with lovely fruit. This is the perfect variety of strawberry for growing in hanging baskets, window boxes or to create a curtain of strawberries!
Much controversy existed in the past over the merits of climbing strawberries and the claims made. Whilst no strawberry can climb in the accepted sense, Rambling Cascade can be trained and tied into trellis, canes or around a stout pole, giving the effect of climbing strawberries.
Rambling Cascade is of course also suitable for open-ground growing and is a fantastic variety for those considering growing in matted rows.
Recommended by the RHS to be an excellent attractant and nectar source for bees and other beneficial insects.
- Self-fertile.
- Ideal for growing either in pots, baskets or the open ground.
- Plant 18" (45 cm) apart.
