Description
To many the 'Opium Poppy' conjures up sinister thoughts. In reality this is a truly beautiful flowering plant in its own right - as well as being both 'sinister' (in its use for the production of heroine and illegal opium) as well as being a 'benefit to society' (as the source of legal opiates including codeine).
But just enjoy this plant for its beautiful flowers in shades of pinks and purple which are large and 'open' with a papery appearance. Flowering over a period of a couple of months, each flower lasts just a few days before maturing to the seed pod - which equally give a lovely architectural effect. Plant on mass for a truly stunning display.
Recommended by the RHS to be an excellent attractant and nectar source for bees and other beneficial insects.
- Flower June - August.
- Grow to around 2 - 3 feet (60 - 90 cm) tall.
- Thrive in full sun.
- Prefer well drained soils - and particularly good on poorer soils.
- Hardy annual though can prove tender in very wet winters.
- Provided they are grown away from other poppies they will set seed quite true to type.
Please Note
Cultivation of Papaver somniferum is legal in the UK - the harvesting and processing of it for the production of drugs, legal or otherwise, is not!
