Description
Of course, the 'interest' to this variety is the tiger stripe in the fruits, bright red fruits have green or yellow stripes, kids love them. But don't let looks be the only reason for growing this old variety.
The billiard ball-sized fruits have a really firm and meaty texture, making them ideal for slicing when you don't want the slices to collapse. The flavour is well balanced, perfect for anything from cooked dishes to salads.
Tigerella is thought to have orignated in the UK by Dr Lewis Darby and have been bred from Ailsa Craig maybe in the 1950s, or maybe the Glasshouse Research Institute, England in 1930s, but no-one is really sure, either way, it's well worth keeping this variety alive!
- This is an indeterminate variety and best grown as a cordon (vine).
- For best yields stop at 5th truss if growing under protection (3rd outside).
