Description
This old variety is very closely related to the wild Mexican tomato, which explains why the trusses of fruit display their characteristic open and wild habit, making a truss perfect for grilling and draping on a steak or similar (this is one of Jamie Oliver's favourite varieties).
The fruits themselves are around ½" (1 cm) in diameter and extremely sweet and juicy. This is a real burst-in-the-mouth experience.
Vigorous, easy to grow and prolific, this is, in our opinion, by far the best cherry tomato there is, and with its wild ancestry has a very good cold tolerance making it ideal for cooler gardens.
Matt's Wild Cherry was acquired by a friend of Dr Matt Liebman and Dr Laura Merrick from Hidalgo, East Mexico, then taken to Maine, USA by Teresa Arellanos de Mena where it became more widely known.
- This is an indeterminate variety and best grown as a cordon (vine).
- Just let this go as high as you can! 8-10 trusses under protection is more than possible; around 5 outside is the maximum manageable.
- Whilst the best crops will be grown under protection, this variety can also be grown outside.
