Description
At first glance this old, heirloom variety of tomato could easily be mistaken for a Sweet Pepper. When cut open the confusion may continue as inside you will find very little flesh!
The bright golden yellow fruits average around 3" (7.5 cm) in diameter and have a 'ridged' shape similar to a Sweet Pepper. The skin is very thin with walls that are extremely thick and fleshy, which makes up for the void within. Sliced through horizontally these make perfect tomato rings that are wonderful deep fried in tempura batter.
But probably the best way to eat these is to stuff them! Uncooked the thick walls will give a satisfying crunch with a sweet, well balanced, yet mild flavour, but cooked they mean collapse is a rare occurrence.
Orginally named Ruby Gold, by John Lewis Childs, New York, in 1921, it was renamed in 1976 by Ben Quisneberry
- This is an indeterminate variety and best grown as a cordon (vine).
- For best yields and size of fruit stop at 5th truss if growing under protection (3rd outside).
- Whilst the best crops will be grown under protection, this variety can also be grown outside.
